MAM Quiz 1

Hi All,

Today I am starting a series of film based quizzes for Mad About Moviez. The intention is to do one quiz every week.
The first set of 10 questions mostly deal in films from 50s to early 70s and are primarily related to Indian films in general.

This 1940s Drama film won an Oscar for its leading lady, who was one of the major stars in the golden age along with her sister. After a couple of decades, this film was remade in Bollywood and the leading lady again won a major award for her role. Identify both the films. (5+5)

2. X is a 1930s novel explores the themes of medical ethics through the eyes of a young idealistic doctor who chooses to work in difficult conditions. The Scottish author drew from his own experience as a physician for this novel. It has seen multiple film and TV adaptations in the west but you just have to name the novel X and its Bollywood adaptation Y from 1971. (5+5)

She grew up in the subcontinent and a lot of her novels are set in this backdrop. Many of her works have been adapted into films, including a highly acclaimed Powell and Pressburger classic. But what you have to name is her novel about an English family settled in India that was adapted into a film of the same name in 1951. (10)

He is a Japanese musician. Among others, he scored the music for a 1991 Japanese biopic. But he achieved greater fame when his score from that film was used in another film in the year 2000. He has recently composed for an international production that is based on a classic 19^th century English novel and the film also has an Indian composer on board. Identify him and all the three films mentioned and the Indian composer. (2+2+2+2+2)

This RAF veteran turned author rarely receives any academic attention but the fact is that he was one of the most prolific authors of thrillers.  His works have been adapted many times by filmmakers but recently he was brought back to public consciousness by a 2007 film that referenced him very fondly. Identify the author as well as the film in question. (5+5)

She is well known as a novelist but has also worked on several films mostly as scriptwriter for adaptations of her own novels. Identify her and give me one rare instance from the year 1965 when she was involved in a film that is not based on her work. (5+5)

A symbolic question… Just give me a 60s Hindi film name from this…

If this is believed to be the first then what is the last (Ignoring remakes)? (10)

9.  

This biopic of a 15^th century explorer was a joint production between two countries that was made in two different languages. This is the poster of one version. Give me the name of the other version. (10)
