A few years ago, Bollywood Productions would often say that they were making Crossover films. Now what exactly did they mean by crossover films? Till date nobody has any clue and producers have stopped using the term.

Japanese Fans Dressed up as Robot for screening of Robot

It is a well known fact that in the overseas market Indian films do not have market generally beyond Indian Diaspora. It seems but this applies only to Bollywood films. The fan following of SUPERSTAR Rajnikanth is not just limited to India,he has a loyal fan following in Japan a (non-Indian diaspora market) too. In 1998 when his film Muthu was released in Tokyo as Muthu-The Dancing Maharaja it went to gross over more than 208 million yen and ran for more than 23 weeks , with a exceptionally high 90% occupancy. The film was released later in other parts of Japan too. In fact it become so popular that NHK, the most conservative channel in Japan telecasted it on 2001. The movie’s success was so massive that there was a legal case filed by distributors and agents in Japan for rights of his previous movie Yajaman. By seeing this trend Bollywood Released DDLJ, Dil Se and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in Japan, but all of them were rejected outright by the Japanese audience.

Shankar’s Endhiran/Robot India’s most expensive film, enthralled audience in India when it was released in 2010 and went to become one of the biggest grossers. And now Robot is in the news for it’s release in Japan. While initially the Japanese version was released with a shorter 2 hour duration apparently now based on popularity the original 3 hour version with all the edited songs and scenes intact has been released in some 1300 odd screens across Japan. It seems Rajni has again won the hearts of his Japanese fans.

Do check the trailer of the Japanese version and give us your feedback in the comments section.Happy weekend and Sayonara.
