Love,Wrinkle-Free Movie Review

India has come a long way from the time when the only available cosmetic item in most middle class homes was talcum powder and when bras were just in 3 colours, conical and ill- fitted. Love Wrinkle Free talks about people who are searching for their identity in this new India. This is definitely a very good idea to explore through the cinematic medium

Love, Wrinkle Free is the début film of  director Sandeep Mohan. Though the trailers may make you believe it is risqué comedy, the truth is far from it.Set in Goa the story is about Savio ( Ash Chandler ) who works in an inner-wear company and is married to Annie ( Shernaz Patel ) who is 8 years elder to him and they have an adopted teenage daughter Ruth ( Arika Silaichia ). We learn that all 3 characters are in search of their identity around their role in this rapidly changing world which questions their belief and value system.

Savio is facing mid-life career crisis with his chance of promotion being usurped by a relative of the Marketing Head from H.O. He then attends Salsa classes on Sundays to sharpen his overall profile .While his wife Annie, a devout Roman Catholic runs a small restaurant, her passion lies in singing for the choir at their regular church. Her inspiration being her mother who sang in the choir till she was sixty years old. Annie discovers that the church is now interested in having younger people to sing for the choir. Meanwhile their adopted daughter Ruth thinks she is of Tibetan origin and is confused as to why she does not look like her parents.

Things get complicated when Annie get pregnant and that’s when Savio meets Natalie and Rajeev in Salsa class, which he attends to improve his business skills. Soon circumstances pave way for Savio to start a business dealing with edible lingerie in partnership with Rajeev and it is easily predictable that Rajeev will run away with the money and he does exactly the same. From here onwards the film loses its plot  as it involves local Goan Mafia, a doper being smitten by the pregnant Annie, football,Yoga Calendar and too many sub plots. It is as if Sandeep was scared that he would not get a second chance to make a film and he wanted to put everything inside one, and in doing so he falls flat.

Coming to the positive points of the movie, one of them is the OST, it is refreshing and original.Wish the makers promoted a bit more of the same. It is good to see a Roman Catholic family not being reduced to caricature like in Bollywood films where they just drink and say ‘Man’ after every word they utter on the screen. Also it comes as a breath of fresh air to see romance between two people who are in their 30’s and 40’s and not being coy about being sexually attracted to each other.

In terms of performances Ash Chandler’s bumbling act gets into your nerves after some time, with his constant expression of being lost.Shernaz Patel steals the show with her charm and histrionic skills.Seema Rahamani who plays the role of Natalie gives new meaning to hamming. I do not understand why people cast her and what was she doing for a major part of the movie.Ashwin Mushran as the doper who falls in love with Annie, is okay. While rest of the cast is just about average.

Like I said the idea was great, but then the execution is not. It could have been a far better movie that what it actually is. All I can say is it is a lost opportunity.
