Jannat 2 Movie Review-The Bollywood Sequel Saga Continues

On 15th August, 2003 when Bhai ( Salman Khan of course ) was back with a bang with Tere Naam, there was another movie which released the same day which went relatively unnoticed. This film-Footpath marked the debut of Emraan Hashmi. He was not really the protagonist of the movie and I had thought then that here’s yet another flopiya actor from Bollywood Dynasty. The very next year he become the face of sex in Bollywood. If people went to watch Murder for Mallika, they came back asking for more of Emraan. Mahesh Bhatt was quick to capitalize on this image of Emraan as a serial kisser, which was used successfully in films like Zeher, Kalyug etc and sometimes it misfired in films like The Train. Awarapann showed that he could act too, apart from kissing and thereafter he has been steadily improving. I quite enjoyed Jannat, and have been a fan of Emraan in recent times.

Jannat 2 begins with Emraan running  around a loan shark and within minutes he with his sense of street smartness sells a gun to the man and pockets money from him. We are introduced to montages where Sonu Dilli ( Emraan ) preaches how he is doing social work, makes loves to prostitutes and is known as Kutti Kameni Cheez (Scum) all over Delhi. The first few scenes are played to gallery to keep Emraan’s fans happy. In one scene he even climaxes while singing a Rafi Song. Enter the alcoholic cop Pratap (Randeep Hooda) who is on the lookout for illegal gun runners. Pratap wants to catch the main culprit i.e the person behind the illegal arms business in Delhi using Sonu. Meanwhile Sonu falls head over heels in love with Janhavi (Eesha) who is a doctor, and is the on path of reform to marry her but Pratap coaxes him to do a job for one more time and things get complicated from there on.

The Serial Kisser

It is not that Jannat 2 is a great movie, it has twists which are predictable if you are a faithful follower of Hindi films. Nonetheless it is an enjoyable ride, like that junk food which you know is not good for your health but you certainly can’t get enough of.

Like in the first Jannat which claimed it was an expose on match fixing scandal, but in the movie it was just a scene, similarly here you won’t a learn a single thing about illegal guns dealing. Oh yes if you still want to know have they used any reference to real life, there’s a passing reference to Radhika Tanwar case which triggers the story forward. While the first film was based on the relationship between boy and girl, here it is bromance between Emraan and Randeep sharing love-hate relationship mixed with mutual distrust and contempt which is finally turned into respect and redemption for each of them.

Let the Cups do the talking

Randeep Hooda seems to be another Suresh Gopi, with him playing role of cops in most of his movies. While as for Eesha it’s her cups which do the talking. The movie certainly belongs to Emraan, he seems to enjoy the role and having a ball playing Sonu Dilli. Only sour note I found was his dropping of Haryanvi accent mid-way of the film. You know that he is not a great actor but there is a certain charm that he carries that makes you root for him. He has mastered the role of a youth who wants to make it big, who is on the other side of law, and is redefining morality. There’s a scene in the movie where Emraan tells his friend how badly he wants domesticated life, but the irony is that the same actor is known for roles which mocked the institution of marriage which gave him his fan following . Do not forget to look out for references to Mahesh Bhatt’s Naam,Big B’s Don and Ram Balaram.

If you are a fan of Emraan like me, you will enjoy this, and if you are not, but are in the mood for some time pass popcorn fare then go for it.

were the pics chosen by you? I think Jannat was atleast better than this. For Randeep, Bollywood finally has typecasted him for a ganster or a cop only

Well while I do agree that Emran Hashmi completely looked in control in the film, I would say that its Randeep Hooda who springs a surprise. The whole film works because of the strange camaraderie that these 2 guys have for each other.
