It’s been our constant endeavor at MAM to keep on pushing ourselves to try something new. Like for example the way we have gone about revamping the layout and introducing various sections etc. Keeping in line with this objective we have now decided to start the Director’s Cut Blogathon this month. The idea is to highlight upon one director at a time and bring out various aspects with respect to his/her films and foster an interesting discussion among people regarding the same. We are starting of the series with one of the most popular and celebrated filmmakers in India presently, Mani Ratnam.
So how did we go about selecting Mani Ratnam? Well the answer is simple,we went about asking some of our authors and looked at starting off with a filmmaker who has a minimum of 10 films to his/her credit and whose body of work would have reached out to a cross section of our readers as well. Also another thing that went in favor of Mani Ratnam is the fact that even though he’s been more prolific making Tamil movies, he’s also made films in Hindi,Telugu,Malayalam and Kannada. What do we intend to cover with this blogathon?
1. Critical take on all the films made by Mani Ratnam
2. Thoughts on certain essential subjects that have been deliberated upon in some of his films like politics, love and relationships, technical details with respect to his films, music of his films etc.
3. Choice of actors used and technicians and their impact on the films
We would not want to put up plain vanilla reviews of his films primarily because a lot of his films have been seen by most of us and also because the films are not current releases to put up contemporary style reviews of the same. So we would encourage people to rather write on the films with an outlook of providing a critical take and look at coming up with various other inputs for example creative posts like songs or poems written ( maybe influenced by some/all films of Mani Ratnam ), talk about the influence of Mani’s films in our lives or in the kind of cinema that we would like to make/watch.
As of now critical take on all the 22 films of his ( released projects directed by him ) have already been lined up. The blogathon got kick started recently with a take on his 1st film- Pallavi Anupallavi and the series will hereafter feature 2 posts every Tuesday and Thursday and 1 post every Saturday.
