For most of us who are mad about movies, movies mean more than just three odd hours of escape from the reality. We watch movies, re-watch them, talk about them, love them, hate them, imbibe something from them, quote dialogues, write reviews, and recommend them to that extent that people sometimes think we are being paid for it. I will share my passion for some of my most favourite films here but for now, it is about Gaytham Vasudev Menon’s ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya’. I remember, after watching the movie for first time at Bangalore an year or two back, I headed straight to the bar, mumbling to myself “Bh**C***, Karthik is me… I am Karthik, mofo Menon stole my story from me.”

After getting wasted at the bar that night, I watched that movie over and over again; the Tamil version 25 times and the Telugu version 12 times, that too at the theatre. It ceased to be just a film for me. I felt like Menon told me what exactly I need to do in life. Many more viewings happened and life was chugging along till I heard that Menon saar is remaking the film in Hindi. My first reaction was ecstatic; I was jumping around like a maniac with his pants on fire.

The second reaction was – I HAVE TO BE A PART OF THE FUCKING REMAKE OR ELSE I WILL DIE OR KILL SOMEONE!!! I pulled all strings possible. Got Menon saar’s number; tried to call him, sent him a hundred drunk texts and the works. Then I approached one of his Ads and he said that I should stop trying. I didn’t stop. Then at one point, a friend from PFC, advised me not to work Menon as an AD because he is a pain in the ass. I didn’t give a fuck. I knew I had to be a part of the remake, any fucking how!

After a lot more heart burn and many drunken sessions, I finally sent a message to Menon saar saying, “Without Magik (that’s me) on board, Hindi VTV will fall flat on its face.”

I gave up. Enough. Mundu.

Cut to a few days back when I saw the first promo of the remake titled ‘Ek Deewana Tha’ I patted myself on the back. Because Menon made a mundu out of himself, mostly thanks to Prateik. Javed saab, who has penned the lyrics of the film ruined it further. It was a total WTF!!! Now, I don’t mean any disrespect to Javed saab but he ruined ‘Hosanna’ for me. He butchered it. He stole the soul from the original and made it like some cheap wannabe song which meant so much to me.

Another drunken session ensued during which I thought, let me take justice in my hands; aakhir mere paas keyboard hai. I thrashed out my version of the Hindi Hosanna. Here it is:

Kaise rahoon, ek pal tere bin
Kaise kahoon, tu hi to hai meri bas…

Oh hosaanaaaaa

Aas-paas rehti woh jitna bhi chaahe
main rokoon ya tokoon usey
Kehti hai mujhko ki chaahoon main usko bhi
Jitna wo chaahe mujhe

Pyaari badi to hai wo… hosanna
Chahoon badaa usko… hosanna
Ab chaahe jo abhi
Woh na miley mujhko

Dua ye hai ke bas
Hamesha muskaati rahe wo

Hosaanaaa…

Everybody wanna know I feel like aa
Feel like aa really wanna be with you
It’s not enough to say that we’re
Made for each other,
Its not that its Hosanna true

Be there when am callin’ out the Hosanna name
Be there as if whole life has changed
I never wanna be the same,
Its time we re-arrange

Hosanna……

Tere sang sab kuchh to
pyaara lagey mujhko
Sab kuchh khudaai lagey
Tere bin maangoon kya
Soona lagey mujhko
Kuchh na jeene mein bachey

Hosaannnaaaa

Aur ab main maangoon kya
Dega mujhko ab to khuda bhi kya
Kya hai tere begair
Na dhoop, na seher

Sab chhoota mere yaar
Jab samjha maine tera pyaar
Bas reh ja yahaan to tu
Ya keh de bas ye tu

Hosaannnnnnnnaaaaaaaaaaa

Chaand mein hi basti wo, hosanna
Taaron ko kyon takhti wo
Kuchh to pyaari baat hai
Meri woh qaayanaat hai

Hosanna…

Kaise rahoon, ek pal tere bin
Kaise kahoon, tu hi to hai meri bas…

Do drop in a comment if you think I did a better job than Javed saab. Let me know if you think I didn’t.

and for all those who still care, here’s the video of the orginal Hosanna from VTV

i m sure many guys would have felt the exact same way after watching VTV.. the story is such…

as for the comparison between the 2 lyrics, i will do so after i hear the full version in hindi.. but the portion which u wrote

    “Ab chaahe jo abhi
    Woh na miley mujhko
    Dua ye hai ke bas
    Hamesha muskaati rahe wo”

isn’t it a bit sad in tone? given the fact that Hosanna is a fun song!! rest, i really liked :-) )

i fully agree, prateik is a sore… siddharth would have been so good… even someone like ranveer could have done it pretty well.. if there’s one casting i like its Manu Rishi as the DOP…

Though its still early to have a view on it, but your penchant for poem is always admirable.

My judgement of the soundtrack will be only for 2 numbers, Mannipaaya & Aaromale…If that gets fucked up, i am on rage.

Early to comment but Yes frm what v hav heard … the Hindi lyrics do seem a bit crappy :(
Anyways lets wait for the whole thing to come out … if it ends up being totally crappy then am just gonna sing the song with ur Lyrics bro ;)

    @magik: hey … that’s a lot of pent-up feelings in your heart … go easy dude …
javed saab may not have got as many days to pen the song as the number of times u have seen the movie … hence it resulted in yet another song …
u have absorbed the movie … drunk it like ‘old monk’ … whereas javed saab is doing his job … that’s the difference between ‘a job’ and ‘a passion’
    .
your moment of glory will come too … keep the faith … cheers !

Well Magik you & I go a fairly long back by now & VTV happens to be one of the things that connects us. I can feel your angst & I’m nos sure how Ek Deewana Tha will turn out. But at least its good to let one’s feeling out in the open like how you did, viva cinema :)

Good job buddy.Although it is a bit early to say hwo good or bad Javed saab’s version. But i dont have much of a positive feeling going by the initial promos. But your power of the prose has always been very good. Good going buddy and keep it up.
For me also this movie and its songs have a special place in my heart. And if its other songs and Hosanna its messed up with, i will also be pretty pissed. Till then hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
