Rascals Movie Review – Maa Ki Aankh

Once upon a time before I discovered Ray and Kurosawa, David Dhawan was my favourite director. His Aankhen, Judwaa, Shola aur Shabnam till date remain my favorite guilty pleasure movies. But in the last few years he has lost his touch. The only thing improving is production value of his movies, now his actors wear costumes which are modern and suave but we have lost the storyteller in him.
Rascals begins with 2-d animation of Sanjay dutt and Ajay Devgn, the moment you see this , you have a sinking feeling that it is going to be downhill from here. The title sequence is inspired from Do aur Do Paanch and the film talks about two conmen Chetan(Sanjay Dutt) and Bhagat(Ajay Devgn) who try to outwit each other to win the love and money of a rich heiress ( Kangna Ranaut ) with an IQ which might even make Darsheel of TZP look Einstein. She is someone who roams around with 4 bodyguards , which I assume is out of necessity when the clothes she is wearing are the size of handkerchief. There is not a moment of genuine laughter in between the banter of both of Sanjay and Ajay and I am not dwelling on story here because there has to be one in first place.
Some of the supposedly funny scenes are downright insensitive. These include scenes involving Somalia children, wish our filmmakers just looked out of car window and saw poverty in our country. Similarly the scenes where blind people are made to run or drunk revelry happens in a Church are in very poor light.I guess audience has had enough of SLB bashing, it is not fresh anymore.Among the actors Sanjay Dutt sleepwalks as usual, the only thing which changes is his wig ( so there was no one checking out continuity among the crew ? ) and his paunch which gets bigger and bigger. While Ajay tries hard to be in his Golmaal Mode, Kangana prances around in a bikini and she has a voice which feels like mosquito buzzing in your ears.Oh! and the film also has Lisa Haydon who just needs to flaunt her body & nothing else.
Music by Vishal- Shekhar offers nothing new. In spite of duration of just about 120 minutes, to sit and endure this movie you must have patience, lots of it in fact. Surprisingly the production value of the movie seems to be of low quality.
P.S- There is also Chunky Pandey who reprises his same avtaar of Housefull, this time he is Gujrati.
I would suggest you to revisit any of David-Govinda’s earlier movies rather than watching this Trashcals.

Did anybody compell you to watch this film….You have not even seen FORCE, which was a better release in last couple of weeks….And your review makes MAUSAM feel like a real classic…..
no it was out of own free will, i had hopes with this movie
You had hopes that Kangna will give free passes on all her future releases if you watch this one.
While Cinemausher had hopes I admit I did not have any such expectation but still watched the film ( and ended up getting plain irritated ). Films like these are lazy, cheap& made just with the idea of making a fast buck
((
I can understand your pain as it was a family affair.
